Delhaize seeks U.S. unit's shares
The Belgian parent of the Kash n' Karry chain says the stock swap will help it compete in a global marketplace.

CORPORATIONS LOWER OUTLOOK: DuPont Co. and May Department Stores Co. head a list of companies that issued profit warnings. DuPont said it won't meet earnings forecasts for the year because of higher oil and natural gas prices, a weak euro and "some slowing" in the U.S. economy. May cited slow back-to-school sales and difficulty clearing out spring and summer apparel. Other companies to lower their earnings forecasts include Circuit City Group, Campbell Soup Co. and Alltel Corp.

Wachovia taps Tampa's Davis Baldwin Insurance
Wachovia Bank has agreed to buy Tampa-based DavisBaldwin Insurance in one of the country's biggest mergers spurred by federal deregulation tearing down barriers between the two industries.

Cynthia Henderson's move to fire the Attorney General's office as a real estate panel's legal counsel has been called personal.

NEXTEL RISES ON REPORT: Nextel Communications Inc. shares rose 5.9 percent after the Wall Street Journal said AT&T Wireless Group is considering a combination with the rival wireless telephone provider. Nextel rose $2.94 to $53. Spokesmen for both companies declined to comment on the article. AT&T Wireless fell 63 cents to $25 on the New York Stock Exchange. They've fallen 21 percent since their initial public sale in April. The Journal reported that AT&T Wireless, the mobile-phone business of long-distance provider AT&T Corp., could merge with Nextel as a way to boost its lagging share price.
