Gabrielle sends up hurricane watches
|
Even with the slow-moving tropical storm expected to hit near Sarasota, other bay area counties close schools today.
As of 11 p.m. Thursday, the center of Gabrielle - the seventh named storm of the season - was about 150 miles west-southwest of Naples, moving northeast at 6 mph.
Schools will be closed Friday in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee and Polk counties.

NFL, baseball, colleges off for weekend
There will be no college or pro football this weekend. The NFL and said today that it will not play any of its 15 games this weekend following the terrorist attacks. Many college football officials, including those at the Southeastern Conference cancelled games scheduled for Saturday. Major league baseball has decided to resume it schedule on Monday. Story
Airlines service to resume at 11 a.m.
Commercial and private plans will be allowed to start flying at 11 a.m. today, though some airlines -- Southwest Airlines for one -- have decided not to fly at all today. Tampa International remains closed.
