BUCKLEY, JOHN JOSEPH, 79, of Hernando, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000). Born in Bronx, New York, he came here 22 years ago from Babylon, Long Island, N.Y., and was a retired quartermaster for the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Inverness, a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the VFW Leroy Rooks, Hernando, and the Disabled American Veterans 96, Lake Panasoffkee. Survivors include his wife, Jennie Mesagno Buckley; a son, Glenn Lillibridge, New York; a daughter, JoAnn Keegan, Hernando; a sister, Margaret Howard, Hernando; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. ELLIOTT, WALTER, 52, of Beverly Hills, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000). Born in Virginia Beach, Va., he came to Beverly Hills from Crystal River seven years ago and was the owner of a pressure cleaning business. He attended the Living Water Christian Fellowship in Inverness and was an Army veteran, serving in Korea and in the Vietnam War. GATZ, MARY ELIZABETH "BETTY," 66, of Citrus Hills, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) as the result of an automobile accident. Born in Pittsburgh, she moved to Citrus Hills from Safety Harbor six years ago. She was a retired bookkeeper in the construction industry, a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Beverly Hills, and a member of the Citrus Hills Womens Club. Survivors include her husband, Donald P.; two sons, Donald J., Herndon, Va., and David T., Tampa; two daughters, Debra M. Gatz, Hernando, Delores E. Gatz, Tampa, and Denise A. HAMMOND, MARTHA SANDERS, 67, of Homosassa, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at home. Born in Longview, Miss., she came here five years ago from Jasper and was a retired church secretary/bookkeeper. She was a member of the Gulf to Lake Baptist Church, Crystal River. Survivors include a son, E. SEILER, FRANK J., 74, of Homosassa, died Wednesday (Sept. 27, 2000) at home under the care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County. Born in Lemon City, he came here 18 years ago from Miami, and retired as chief of the fire department in Miami. He was Protestant. She worked on an assembly line for a shrimp company and was Protestant. CARVER, MURRAY P. SR. 94, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Tampa, died Thursday (Sept. 28, 2000) in Roanoke. Born in Lake City, he came here 70 years ago before moving to Roanoke. He was retired from TECO after 35 years of service, a Coast Guard veteran and a Baptist. Survivors include two sons, Murray P. Jr. and John Thompson, both of Tampa; three daughters, LaNelda Lyn Carver, Tampa, Elaine Carver, Roanoke, Va., and Mary Durden, New Port Richey; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. COOLEY, WILLIAM R. "BILL," 80, of Plant City, died Saturday (Sept. 30, 2000) at National Health Care of Plant City. Born in McKeesport, Pa., he came here in 1987 from Lansing, Mich. He was territory manager for Uniroyal Tires and one of the founders and a member of the following clubs: the Males Chorus in Country Meadows; the Sunshine Committee;the Shuttlebugs; and an organizer of the Old Socks. He was a World War II Marine Corp veteran and a Presbyterian. - LEWIS, JOSEPH T., 74, of Clearwater, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor. He was born in Winter Haven and came here in 1953 from Miami. He worked as a comptroller for Mease Dunedin Hospital and retired after 22 years of service. He was a Marine veteran of World War II. He managed, coached and played first base for the Bomber Softball Team, Clearwater. He was a graduate of Florida Southern College, Lakeland. - KOCHES, WILLIAM THOMAS, 85, of Pinellas Park, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at Northside Hospital. Born in Brownsville, Pa., he came to Pinellas Park in 1977 from Lincoln Park, Mich. He retired in 1994 as an automobile body repairman with the St. Petersburg Blood Bank. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Medical Corps of the 3rd Armored Division, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. - WAECHTER, RICHARD J. "DICK," 76, of St. Petersburg, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at Palms of Pasadena Hospital, South Pasadena. Born in Massillon, Ohio, he came here in 1948 from Salem, Ohio. He was the owner of Haines Road Hardware from 1948 to 1985. A decorated Navy veteran, he served during World War II in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Alaska. He attended John Carroll University, Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in New Port Richey and a former founding and longtime member of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, where he was the former captain of the usher corps, served on the parish council, and also was chairman of the fall festival. He was a member of the Athletic Boosters Club at Bishop Barry High School, Cursillo, the Kairos Prison Ministry and was an 18-year member of AA. He also was a member of the Chatuge Shores Golf Club in Hayesville, N.C. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Velma; eight sons, Richard J. Jr., John W., Donald C., James D. and William P., all of St. Petersburg, Thomas M., North Hampton, N.H., Joseph J., Orlando, and Robert M., Miami; a daughter, Dr. Mary C. Waechter, Miami; a sister, Maryln Ginty, St. Petersburg; 30 grandchildren; two nieces; and five nephews. Brett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, St. Petersburg.
South Pasadena
- GILPIN, DORIS EMMA, 91, of South Pasadena, died Wednesday (Sept. 27, 2000) at the Springs at Boca Ciega Bay after a lengthy illness. Born in Ravenna, Ohio, she came here in the early 1950s. She was a registered nurse at various hospitals in northern Ohio, and worked at the Scottish Rite, Atlanta. She worked with premature babies at Mound Park Hospital, St. Petersburg, retiring as the night supervisor. She worked at the Fountains of Boca Ciega Bay and was a member of Pasadena Community Church. Survivors include a sister, Grace Heddesheimer, Strongsville, Ohio; a brother, Donald Gilpin, Seminole; three nephews, Don Heddesheimer, Strongsville, Jon Heddesheimer, Alexandria, Va., and Dr. Philip Sloane, Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a niece, Ann Geldes, Columbus, Ohio.
