35 tons of phone books

Second grade teacher Andrea Yoder sorts through old telephone books in a bin at Maniscalco Elementary School in Lutz last week while looking for a wristwatch lost by one of her students. By last Thursday, Maniscalco students had collected 35 tons of outdated phone books. The school is one of six in Hillsborough participating in the program. They will earn $25 per ton and a $250 participation fee from Verizon, the program sponsor. |

LUTZ -- The Rev. Woody Johnson of University Evangelical Presbyterian Church has been holding Sunday morning sermons at Lutz Elementary for weeks, hoping to attract new members living in the Lutz-Land O'Lakes area. It's quite a trip from the church office in Temple Terrace. But if plans go his way, Lutz will be the destination every week.

'Tis the season
CHRISTMAS WITH THE CELTS: The Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa, 11400 Morris Bridge Road, will kick off the season with two holiday concerts. Marcille Wallis and Ceol Binn will present a program of Celtic-style music and dance including Welsh, Irish, Breton, Scottish and Appalachian at 8 p.m. Nov. 30. Also, Southwind, a popular Florida folk acoustic group, will present its fourth annual Holiday Concert starting at 5 p.m. Dec. 2. Jan Glidewell, the St. Petersburg Times Pasco County columnist, will be the emcee. A pre-concert circle acoustic jam featuring Carl Wade will run from 3 to 4:45 p.m. The cost for both concerts is $10. For information, call 837-6572.
North of Tampa divers, swimmers at state meet
TAMPA -- Several North of Tampa area athletes are in action this weekend in Fort Lauderdale at the state swimming and diving championships. In Class 3A, Chamberlain's Grant Nelson, Jeff Mueller and Katie Pippinger are in various competitions, as well as Gaither's Jackie Cavalieri and Wharton's Audrey Prior.
Layton leaves girls golf team a winner
CARROLLWOOD -- For several years in the mid 1990s, Chamberlain had to take a back seat to Bloomingdale in girls golf in Hillsborough County and in Florida high school competition.
Road work
1. INTERSTATE 275, from Busch Boulevard to U.S. 41, will have periodic nighttime lane closures. Also watch for construction at Busch Boulevard and Fowler Avenue near the interstate. Work will continue until two new lanes are complete in fall 2002.
Accident report
1. N DALE MABRY HIGHWAY AT LITTLE ROAD, NOV. 2, 2 A.M.: A northbound 1995 Ford truck rear-ended a 1994 Ford. The Ford truck driver, a 21-year-old man, was charged with DUI. The Ford driver, a 45-year-old man, was taken to University Community Hospital Carrollwood.
