Members of the Citrus County Commission fancy themselves as independent thinkers. We've seen them swell with pride as they boasted about resisting pressure from state agencies to conform. One instance that comes to mind was the commission's refusal a few years ago not to enact a widely accepted state law that requires children to wear helmets while riding bicycles.

CRANES ARRIVE: On a brilliant blue morning that seemed to herald the occasion, six whooping cranes flew into Citrus County last Monday, ending a 48-day journey described as the "wildlife equivalent of putting a man on the moon." Trailing an ultralight aircraft, the rare birds soared over dozens of wide-eyed, gasping spectators in Crystal River before landing about 8 a.m. in a secluded area near their winter home.
