Arguable call not enough to keep Rams alive again
NEW ORLEANS -- It looked as if the Rams were going to be helped by a controversial call on a pass reception for the second straight post-season.

After a prolific stretch, the Ravens offense again has struggled with the former Bucs QB at the helm.

OF NOTE: The trend in Saturday's playoff games was good defense beating good offense, and it's going to continue today.
Bucs
Inner strength
PHILADELPHIA -- The Bucs were bickering. They had just blown a game to the Chicago Bears, a team they had pummelled 41-0 two months earlier. Their three-game winning streak was over. Their playoff hopes were on a slippery slope. The locker room hadn't splintered, but everyone seemed to be wielding an ax.

It's Keyshawn season
In the post-season, Johnson has come up big in college and in the NFL.
Now, Douglas just inflicts pain
When Hugh Douglas lines up against the Bucs today, he will be called upon to take his 6-foot-2, 280-pound frame and successfully challenge offensive linemen who weigh 30 or 40 pounds more.
Coach is both teacher and motivator
When Andy Reid interviewed for the Philadelphia job, he brought with him a three-ring binder that held together all kinds of notes he had taken during his career about what he would do as a head coach.

Letters: Get off the little guy's back; he got us this far
I couldn't believe the Times printed the picture of Martin Gramatica on the front page indicating he lost the Packers game. I can't disagree that if Martin's field goal was good, we would have won the game. But Martin didn't lose the game, the Bucs lost the game. It was a team effort.
Linebacker with a laid-back attitude
Third-year middle linebacker Jamie Duncan has filled the void left by the departure of veteran starter Hardy Nickerson and has come into his own. Here are his thoughts on family life, replacing Nickerson, being a public figure, Michael Jackson, Prince and lots more.
Analysis: John Madden
This game is going to be one of those knockdown-brawl defensive games that will probably be low-scoring. It'll probably go right down to the last two minutes of the game. Someone will kick or miss a field goal. It's not going to be pretty.
Call them born-again Eagles
The careers of several players have been rejuvenated under coach Andy Reid.
NFC Central trio to make changes in off-season
PHILADELPHIA -- A review of the three NFC Central teams that failed to make the playoffs indicates the Bucs' 2001 season will be no easier.
Trash talk has already started
If the Bucs want a taste of the chilly reception they'll get at Veterans Stadium on Saturday, they need only stop by one of several message boards bombarded this week by the kind of dirty, low-blow smashmouth trash-talking they can expect to hear on the sideline.
You wanna talk about a fun job
Between his gigs as play-by-play announcer for the Tampa Bay Bucs and Florida State Seminoles, the past two years have been the best of times for Gene Deckerhoff. But to hear him tell it, there never has been a worst of times.

Intensity driving Morgan
He is tenacious, hard-hitting and sometimes downright scary, but Miami linebacker Dan Morgan might be even more relentless off the field than he is on it.

Captain's corner
Checking tide charts this time of year reveals the extreme low tides of winter. Combine these lows with a stiff northerly wind, and there is little water left in the bay. Many flats fishable on a summer low tide will show bare ground. Using a tide chart that graphs the flow of water and shows water height in decimals, as well as the time, is an important tool in planning trips.

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Indians lost a bit of luster last season by failing to make the playoffs for the first time since 1993. And they have lost quite a bit of talent by not re-signing Manny Ramirez, Sandy Alomar, David Segui and Jason Bere.

Passages in 2000
We remember them when they were young -- or at least younger. Sometimes they fade from memory, to be recalled long after the pinnacle of successful careers. Sometimes they are snatched from us in an instant, their dreams unfulfilled or incomplete.

TAMPA -- A few days after hearing he was left off the ballot and wasn't eligible to win the Guy Toph award, Gaither's Lydell Ross learned Saturday he has a chance to win it after all.
PHU makes good use of rare tournament
As a rule, Palm Harbor University coach Holly Freeman tries to stay away from holiday tournaments. Her team is made up mostly of club players, and they are usually busy playing other tournaments. But Freeman made an exception this year. The 10 seniors approached Freeman about playing in the Sarasota High tournament. The main reason was a hopeful rematch with Sarasota, which PHU met in last season's Class 3A, Region 3 final. PHU met the Sailors in the Dec. 23 final, and the Hurricanes (16-0-1, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A) won 2-0 on second-half goals by Sarah McGonegal and Jackie Vilardi. PHU beat Sarasota last season 2-1.
