Perhaps you associate Coupling and Halving more with physics than with something organic or artistic, but it's the title of the work shown here, and it expands our levels of interpretation. An oil on canvas, 22 by 22 inches, painted by William Pachner in 1971, it is on view at Brad Cooper Gallery. Pachner, 85, is an artist of international reputation who divides his time between homes in Tampa and Woodstock, N.Y. Formerly art director of Esquire magazine, he has earned many accolades, including both a Guggenheim and a Ford Foundation fellowship, and is represented in many museum collections. Locally he taught numerous students who went on to become well-known in the bay area. In 1987 he was given a joint retrospective at the Tampa Museum of Art and the University of South Florida Fine Arts Gallery. At Brad Cooper Gallery his work is part of a 16th anniversary group exhibition that also includes Tanya Softic, David McKirdy, Thomas Koole, Bud Lee and others. Brad Cooper Gallery is at 1712 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City; (813) 248-6098. The show runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment, through Jan. 27. Free.
