Big bellies
More clams, cod, scrod, haddock, lobster, scallops and steamers are flying in for homesick New Englanders here, thanks to two brothers from Quincy, Mass. Kevin McGarry opened the New England Clam Shack (12881 Walsingham Road, Largo.; 727-593-7890) in an old Long John Silver's last March. Brother Kevin revamped the former Nikki's Clam Shack and reopened it last month as Cape Cod Original Clam Shack (6657 49th St N, St. Petersburg; (727) 527-6700). Both stock similar seafood fresh from Ipswich; Cape Cod also serves Yankee pot roast, meatloaf and steaks. Prices run $6.95 to $13.95. Look for a third clam shack coming on the Pinellas beaches too.
New in town
As soon as Johnny Rockets retro burger and malt shop opened (BayWalk Plaza, St. Petersburg; (727) 821-0285), visions of sha-na-na danced in the heads of little ones. Standing in line before and after the movies was a popular answer to "What do we for the rest of the holidays?"
I'VE HAD ENOUGH...
Restaurants without answering machines. Almost every American home has invested $25 in one. But many restaurants haven't, leaving customers clueless about opening hours until the staff's there. New Year's Resolution No. 1: Buy one.
