International pianist plays encore performance
The young Greek pianist Vassilis Varvaresos returns to Tarpon Springs on Sunday for an afternoon concert at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center. Varvaresos, who has been winning international competitions since he was 11, snagged first prize at age 14 in the 1998 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the youngest pianist ever to win the honor. A seasoned performer in Europe, Varvaresos made his Florida debut in 1999. Sunday, his program will include selections by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt. The concert is at 3 p.m.; tickets are $13, $11 for students and center members. Call (727) 942-5605.
Remembering when they were contenders
Sports is almost never effectively portrayed on stage. One notable exception to the rule is That Championship Season, Jason Miller's play about what happens to a group of high school basketball players after the cheering stops.
In a shrewd piece of programming for the buildup to the Super Bowl in Tampa, Stageworks is putting on the 1972 drama about the reunion of five men -- a retired coach and four members of the team he guided to a state championship 30 years earlier. The cast includes, from left, Dave Snider, Richard Coppinger and Bill Carey.
That Championship Season has performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Hillsborough Community College's Performing Arts Building in Ybor City. It runs through Jan. 21. Tickets: $7-$14. (813) 258-6757.
