Virginia Tech had scored 22 straight points and took its first lead of the night, 29-28, with 2:13 left in the third quarter. Florida State responded with an 11-play, 85-yard drive, scoring on a 14-yard pass from Chris Weinke to Ron Dugans. Weinke connected with Peter Warrick for the two-point conversion and a 36-29 lead with 12:59 left.
