ST. PETERSBURG -- A 40-year-old Palm Harbor woman was killed Thursday night when her sport utility vehicle hit a tree alongside Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, police said.

Pamela J. Ricketts, 40, was critically injured in the 10:15 p.m. crash and was pronounced dead within 40 minutes at Bayfront Medical Center. Her Ford Explorer was westbound when it ran off the south side of Central Avenue near 52nd Street. Police don't know why Ricketts drove over a curb and into a tree. They found no skid marks to indicate she had used her brakes.

Officers are investigating whether a medical problem might have caused the crash. Ricketts lived at 3649 Sapphire Lane in Palm Harbor, in a house she bought eight years ago.
