A look back at the week's top storie

WESCH, KERN APPLY FOR TOP JOBS: Richard Wesch applied to be Citrus County's next top administrator. He previously has been assistant administrator and now serves as interim administrator. He would replace Gary Kuhl, who left in September. Meanwhile, Assistant County Attorney Carl Kern said he will apply for county attorney, the position that Larry Haag will leave next month after two decades on the job.

ROYCE CARTER TO LEAVE: Citrus County Veterans Service Officer Royce Carter has resigned to take a similar position with Pinellas County, an area with almost six times as many veterans as Citrus. Carter's last day will be Jan. 19.

COWIN SUGGESTS COURT CHANGES: State Sen. Anna Cowin said she will introduce legislation that would change the way Florida selects and retains justice on the state's high court. Cowin said justices should go through standard elections just as county and circuit judges do, instead of standing for merit retention. Term limits and changes in the judicial nominating process might be part of a reform package, as well.

FIRST BABY OF THE YEAR: Citrus County's first baby of the new year wasted little time making his mark on the world. Devin Michael Hunter announced his arrival with a newborn's scratchy cries at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1 at Citrus Memorial Hospital. His parents are Jamie and Robert Hunter.
