Cooking tips for kids

If you're 9 to 13 years old, you can participate in the Publix/Pillsbury Kids' Cooking School Saturday at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa (701 Channelside Drive). The class is free to the first 250 people. It takes place on the Aquarium's Cafe Ray deck from 1 to 2:30 p.m and will offer demonstrations in cooking safety, food sanitation and recipe preparation. While there you can enter the Publix/Pillsbury Kids' Bake-Off Contest, which takes place at the aquarium April 7. The finals are at Sea World in Orlando. Bake-Off entry forms are also available at Publix stores. Entries must be received by Feb. 17. For more information call the Florida Aquarium at (813) 273-4000.

The scoop on scooters

For all of you who got scooters as holiday gifts, check out a new book called Scooter Mania (St. Martin's Press, $7.95). It's written by kids for kids and covers scooter topics such as tricks, safety, gear and accessories. Twins Willy and Max Schlesinger of New York wrote the book, weighing in, among other things, on the debate over big wheels vs. small wheels, explaining the advantages of each. photo

Celebrate the dream

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday on Jan. 15, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center is offering Melodies of the Dream in Ferguson Hall at 7:30 p.m. Included in the free presentation will be performances by Tampa students. Kids from Ballast Point Elementary will tell a traditional African story, Seminole Heights Elementary will contribute music and Blake High School students will perform an original dance. Though it's free, tickets must be acquired from the center (813) 229-7827 or Ticketmaster.

Keep fit, keep time

photo Timex has developed a performance sport watch for kids. The Ironkids line offers seven styles, with each selling for about $30 in department and discount stores.
