Commission schedules workshop

BROOKSVILLE -- The Hernando County Commission has scheduled a workshop for 9 a.m. Thursday in the commission chambers of the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St. The workshop is to discuss issues in regards to the Hernando County Utilities Department and the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Organizations host dinner, show

SPRING HILL -- VFW Post 10209 and Ladies Auxiliary will host a dinner and entertainment by the Mummers from 2 to 6 p.m. Jan. 21 at the post, 15166 Spring Hill Drive. The meatloaf dinner will be served from 3 to 4 p.m. The cost is $6.50 per person. For information/tickets, call the post at 796-0398.

Entry forms available for fair

BROOKSVILLE -- Entry forms are available for the baby and Miss Sunburst contests to be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Hernando County Fair. The baby contest is open to boys and girls ages 3 and younger, and the Miss Sunburst is open to girls ages 4-27. The entry fee is $35. There are additional costs for optional categories such as best attire, best smile, prettiest eyes, etc. Entry forms are available at the Hernando County Fair office, 6436 S Broad St., as well as in the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St., and will be acccepted through the morning of the pageant. Volunteer program seeks recruits

The Hernando County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers ages 55 and older. RSVP involves seniors in services that match their personal interests, from a few hours to more than 40 hours a week. There are more than 90 non-profit organizations RSVP volunteers work with. There are no dues or membership fees. For further information, call the RSVP office at 797-7017.

Parenting workshops are free

Free Active Parenting Workshops for parents of children ages 3-12 are being offered by Exceptional Student Education, Childhood Development Services and SEDNET District 13. During the six-week program, parents meet once a week for a two-hour class. The class is video based and books are supplied. Workshops are available at the following times and locations:

6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 16, 2001, through Feb. 20, 2001, at Brooksville Elementary School.

6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 22 through March 5 at Deltona Elementary School.

6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 8 through March 15 at Spring Hill Elementary School.

6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 15 through March 22 at Floyd Elementary School.

Reservations are required and space is limited. To register or for information, call Doris Gero at 797-7022. Child care is available upon request.

Program provides free testing

HEART Literacy Adult Education Program provides free pre-GED testing, one-to-one and small group tutoring of reading and math (including English for Speakers of Other Languages). Classes are provided for ages 18 and older at the following locations:

5 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, Spring Hill Elementary School, 6000 Roble Ave., Spring Hill.

9 a.m. to noon Monday and Wednesday, Church of the Nazarene, Cobblestone and County Line Road, Spring Hill.

9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Brooksville Assembly of God, 20366 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville.

11 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Robert R. Moton Early Intervention Center, St. Francis Street, Brooksville.

6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Masaryktown Community Center, Lincoln Avenue, Masaryktown.

6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, Eastside Elementary School, 27151 Roper Ave., Brooksville.

Free child care is available at some sites. Those attending are to bring photo identification. For information, call 797-7018.
