The winning teams were: Algebra 1: first place, Southside Fundamental Team 3, John Comea, Leann Goree, Dana Hershkowitz and Safiya Miller; second place, Bay Point Middle Team 1, Thomas Barrett, Bryce Unger, and Joshua Vasquez; third place, Safety Harbor Team 3, Mike Ge, Moira Kiernan, Rikin Patel and Max Venker. Middle-school jazz group invited to perform at conferenceThe Jazzy Knights, a jazz ensemble from Oak Grove Middle School, has been invited to perform for the Florida Music Educators Association annual conference at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Tampa Convention Center. The conference will run through Saturday and will host some of the top music educators and finest musicians from around the world. At the conference, the school's band program will also be recognized for receiving Superior Awards from the Florida Bandmasters Association for five consecutive years. Last year, the Jazzy Knights performed at several events, including the National Middle School Association Conference and the Pinellas All-County Music Showcase, titled "Youth to Knowledge." GraduationsKevin John Collins, of Belleair Bluffs, graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a bachelor's degree in computer science. He has accepted a position as an embedded software engineer with the Military Aircraft and Missile Systems Group of Boeing Co. in St. Louis. Collins is also an FAA certified flight instructor in single- and multiengine airplanes. He is the son of John and Maureen Collins of Belleair Bluffs. Amanda Davis, a graduate of Dunedin High, was awarded the Extra Mile Mentor award for her work serving the LEAD Scholars Program at the University of Central Florida. As a mentor, she advised incoming freshmen and helped them to acclimate to college life. Davis is an art major at the university.
