Death case goes to HillsboroughBy BRADY DENNIS © St. Petersburg Times, published January 9, 2001 LAND O'LAKES -- Pasco County sheriff's deputies have turned over the homicide case of a man found dead Thursday in a wooded area near Land O'Lakes to Hillsborough County. Sheriff's Office spokesman Jon Powers said an investigation determined that the homicide actually happened in Hillsborough County and that the body was brought to Pasco County and dumped in the woods. Powers refused to elaborate on how deputies came to that conclusion. The man's body was found Thursday afternoon by a man gathering firewood on state conservation land. He then flagged down a Pasco County sheriff's deputy. A preliminary autopsy Friday revealed that the victim was a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet 9 and 170 to 190 pounds. The body, covered with a tarp, apparently had lain in the woods for quite awhile. It was too decomposed for deputies to determine the sex, age, race or cause of death Thursday night. The autopsy also revealed the man had died of homicidal injuries, though Powers would not elaborate further. Deputies have not released a positive identification of the victim. Powers asked that anyone with information about the case contact the Sheriff's Office at (800) 854-2862 and ask for Detective Alan Proctor. - Brady Dennis covers the city of Zephyrhills and police in east Pasco.
