Lions might pursue Bucs' Edwards as coach

TAMPA -- Bucs defensive backs coach Herman Edwards could be on a list of coaching candidates for the Detroit Lions after Matt Millen is announced as team president today.

Millen, the Fox football commentator, is expected to meet in the next few days with Lions coach Gary Moeller, who signed a three-year contract when he took over in November after Bobby Ross resigned.

Edwards did not want to speculate on Millen's possible interest in him as coach, particularly because Moeller is under contract.

But Edwards said Millen has spoken to him in the past about becoming coach in the NFL. A report in the Detroit News named Edwards as a candidate for the Lions' job, and Millen is believed to have recently contacted Bucs officials about Edwards' credentials.

Millen reportedly also is interested in Broncos quarterbacks coach Gary Kubiak.

"I know he's talked to people about me," Edwards said Monday. "But that was while he was still doing his broadcasting thing. And he's talked to me before about being a head coach.

"I haven't heard from Matt and what he's going to do."

Edwards will interview Jan. 22 for the coaching job of the Houston Texans, who begin play in 2002.

Edwards has served as the Bucs assistant head coach for five seasons under Tony Dungy. Last off-season, he interviewed with the Kansas City Chiefs for their coaching job.

It has been speculated that Edwards might be reunited in some capacity with new Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil, whom he played for with the Philadelphia Eagles.

"People are also speculating whether I would be in the plans for Kansas City because of my relationship with Dick. I don't know," Edwards said. "I haven't heard from him."
