Seton Hall responds with win
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- No. 15 Seton Hall beat No. 25 Notre Dame 78-76 Monday, ending a two-day stretch that included a loss to Georgetown and a one-game suspension for freshman star Eddie Griffin and fellow forward Kevin Wilkins after a locker-room fight.
"Certainly it's been a trying few days for all of us and the program," Seton Hall coach Tommy Amaker said.
Darius Lane's 22 points led the Pirates and freshman Andre Barrett had 20, including a three-pointer with 3:11 left gave Seton Hall the lead for good, 75-73.
OKLAHOMA ST. 88, NO. 18 IOWA ST. 80 (OT): Maurice Baker and Fredrik Jonzen scored 26 points for host Oklahoma State, which let a nine-point lead slip away in the last 3:13 of regulation.
POLL: Stanford topped the rankings after Indiana's upset of previous No. 1 Michigan State on Sunday. The Cardinal rose a spot and the Spartans dropped to No. 3 behind Duke. Tennessee, Kansas, Wake Forest, Illinois, Florida, North Carolina and Virginia rounded out the top 10. Boston College (11-0), off to its best-ever start, entered at No. 24.
OBITUARY: Ken Durrett died of an apparent heart attack Sunday at 52 in Wilkinsburg, Pa. The former La Salle star was named one of the 10 best players in Big 5 history in a 1995 Philadelphia Daily News poll.
FAU 102, JACKSONVILLE ST. 89: Lakewood grad Earnest Crumbley scored a career-high 31 for host Florida Atlantic, which surpassed 100 for the first time since it moved to Division I in 1994.
SAMFORD 76, UCF 62: Mark Salyers scored 23 points, all in the second half, and visiting Samford finished on a 13-2 run. UCF shot 29.4 percent in the second half. Mario Lovett led the Knights with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
STETSON 66, CAMPBELL 59: Ravii Givens scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and 10 in the final 3:07 for host Stetson.
N.C. A&T 68, B-CC 58: Anthony Debro had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead host North Carolina A&T.
S.C. ST. 82, FAMU 74: Vincent Whitt had a season-high 25 points for host South Carolina State. Sonny Tudeme (15 points) led five FAMU players in double figures.
FLORIDA STATE: Freshman forward Michael Joiner, who averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games, was named ACC rookie of the week.
NO. 5 DUKE 73, FSU STATE 60: Alana Beard had 23 points and Iciss Tillis 19 for the visiting Blue Devils. Brooke Wyckoff led Florida State with 16 points.
UNC 71, NO. 16 CLEMSON 70: Juana Brown scored visiting North Carolina's last six points, including the winning basket with 19.1 seconds left.
POLL: Connecticut was No. 1 for the 29th straight poll and Baylor joined at No. 23, its first ranking since 1978. Tennessee, Notre Dame, Georgia and Duke rounded out the top five. Florida rose four places to 10th.
