Riviera Day school gets accreditation

Riviera Day School in St. Petersburg has been granted accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

The voluntary accreditation is achieved by only 7 percent of early childhood programs nationwide. Accredited programs in St. Petersburg include three Head Start centers and the YWCA Child Development Center.

Riviera underwent an intensive self-study, collecting information from parents, teachers, administrators and classroom observations. A panel of professionals trained by NAEYC conducted an on-site evaluation to validate the self-study results.

The day school serves approximately 100 children from 2 years through kindergarten. Its NAEYC accreditation is valid for three years.

Catholic school principal to receive national award

The Rev. Louis J. Molinelli, principal of St. Petersburg Catholic High School, will receive a Catholic Secondary Education Award at the National Catholic Education Association convention in Milwaukee on April 18.

Molinelli, a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, came to St. Petersburg Catholic as administrator three years ago. Under Molinelli's direction, the school's enrollment has increased from 500 to 615. He has been instrumental in bringing students into the school whose financial need may have precluded them from admission.

He also has overseen improvements to the school's campus, including a new media center, expanded athletic facilities and plans for a new performing and visual arts center.

Molinelli serves as chairman for the Diocesan Vocation Committee and is a member of the Diocesan School Advisory Committee and the Diocesan Presbyteral Council. He is a chaplain for ACE Students, a University of Notre Dame teaching program.
