Tributes to mark the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. are scheduled around the Tampa Bay area during the holiday weekend.
Here are some of the events:
St. Petersburg
Tribute events in St. Petersburg begin Sunday with the 16th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Festival of Bands, sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Florida Power Park/Al Lang Field, 180 First Ave. S, 5:30 p.m.
The Martin Luther King annual Leadership Awards breakfast is at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the Coliseum, 535 Fourth Ave. N. Keynote speaker is Dr. Dolly Desselle Adams, recently named one of the 100 most influential African-Americans by Ebony. Tickets are $20. (727) 892-5202 or (727) 893-7494.
The 16th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Justice Parade starts at 1:15 p.m. Monday. Sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the parade follows Bayshore Drive to Central Avenue to Dr. M.L. King Jr. (Ninth) Street.
Tampa
The free Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Family Festival, noon to 4 p.m. Monday at Pepin Rood Stadium, 215 N Boulevard, offers a parade, food, games, crafts and a chance to participate in a community service project. The parade begins at noon at the stadium. (813) 274-8615.

he Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center hosts a free tribute, "Melodies of the Dream," at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The event, featuring local musician Fred Johnson and the 120-member Community Mass Choir, representing 11 churches in the Tampa Bay area, kicks off Tampa's Black Heritage Festival. (813) 229-7827.
The Rev. Bernice King, youngest child of Martin Luther King Jr., is keynote speaker of the University of South Florida's MLK celebration at 7 p.m Tuesday. USF Special Events Center, 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. Free. (813) 974-5111.
Clearwater
The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration/Parade begins with an 8 a.m. breakfast Monday at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center, 1201 Dr. Martin Luther King Ave. $3. The parade begins at 11 a.m. at the recreation center and proceeds to Coachman Park, where a rally will be held at 12:30 p.m. (727) 462-6119.
Largo
The ninth annual candlelight vigil honoring King will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Largo Central Park, corner of East Bay Drive and Seminole Boulevard. It is sponsored by the Bahais of Largo. (727) 584-2080.
Brooksville
A parade honoring King will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, followed by an all-day celebration in Kennedy Park, starting about 10:30 a.m. Parade lineup begins at 9 at the Hernando County Courthouse, 20 N Main St.
Sarasota
Players Theater presents The Dream of Doors, a musical performance based on the lives of King and Rosa Parks. 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 4 p.m. Monday. 838 N Tamiami Trail. $14 adults, $9 students. (941) 365-2494.
