Bulls bitsBy ROD GIPSON © St. Petersburg Times, published January 12, 2001 TAMPA -- After Sunday's 66-52 loss to Cincinnati, the women's basketball team begins a stretch of three road games tonight at Tulane. Following that, the Bulls are at Southern Mississippi on Sunday and at Houston on Jan. 21. The 14-point loss to the Bearcats dropped the Bulls to 3-11 overall and 0-3 in Conference USA, which leaves them last in the National Division. In Tulane, the Bulls will face the top team in the National Division (10-5, 3-0) while trying to end an 11-game road losing streak. The Bulls have lost three in a row and seven of their last eight. Still, the Bulls have some positives to draw on. Guard Shannon Layne is among the top 10 three-point shooters in the league with a .453 percentage (24-of-53). Sophomore guard Aiya Shepard has averaged 14 points a game during the three-game slide and scored a team-high 19 in the loss to Cincinnati. Prior to the loss to the Bearcats, USF played solidly at Louisville, almost pulling off the upset before falling 69-64. MEN'S BASKETBALL: In beating Charlotte 78-71 Wednesday night, USF had another player reach the 1,000-point milestone. Cedric Smith scored 17 points to push his career total to 1,002. He joins B.B. Waldon and Altron Jackson, both of whom passed the 1,000-point plateau earlier this year. It marks the first time in school history more than two players passed the mark in the same season. Fourteen USF players now have scored at least 1,000 points in their careers. FOOTBALL: Offensive tackle Kenyatta Jones, defensive back Anthony Henry and kicker Bill Gramatica will play in all-star games this weekend. Jones and Henry will be in Orlando at the Gridiron Classic while Gramatica will play for the East in the East-West Shrine Game in Palo Alto, Calif. The Gridiron Classic will be shown live on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. Saturday while the East-West Game will be on ESPN at 4 p.m. Saturday. BASEBALL: The season is a month away, but the Bulls already are receiving recognition. Collegiate Baseball has picked the Bulls to finish fifth in Conference USA, and outfielder Mike Cunningham earned preseason freshman All-American honors. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
