Crystal River launches manatee celebration
By JORGE SANCHEZ © St. Petersburg Times, published January 13, 2001 The Florida Manatee Festival begins its two-day visit to downtown Crystal River today, offering manatee-sightseeing boat tours, fine art, crafts, food and entertainment. Free boat trips to see manatees on Kings Bay will be offered from noon to 3 p.m. both days of the festival. Tickets for the boat rides will be given out at the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce information booth at N Citrus Avenue and NW Seventh Street. The boats will depart from Crystal River Manatee Dive and Tour, 267 NW Third St. Shuttle buses will take people from the nearby First Baptist Church parking lot to the dive shop. An exhibit area with all types of manatee information will be on Citrus Avenue at Heritage Village. Manatee videos and films will be shown at City Hall on U.S. 19 both days of the festival. A fine arts show sponsored by the St. Petersburg Times and a craft show sponsored by the Crystal River Rotary are part of the festival. Admission is $1. Parking will be the most plentiful at Crystal River Mall, U.S. 19, a mile or so north of the festival. A free shuttle-bus will take people to the festival. In other events, the Razz Ma Tazz dixieland band performs a special manatee festival show at Rock Crusher Canyon Garden Pavilion beginning at 7 p.m. today. Admission is $15, which includes a buffet. On Sunday, Jon Semmes and Florida Friends perform from 2:30 to 4:45 p.m. at the Sunday Sampler concert series at the Historic Theater at Dunnellon Middle School on Park Avenue. Admission is $7.
