Promoter pitches entertainment plan

HUDSON -- As the county's leaders consider what kind of entertainment complex would work in Pasco, some local investors are making plans to build their own outdoor concert venue, hoping to lure local and national talent and thousands of residents and tourists.

Clearwater-based promoter Frank Allen has designed a project he'd like to put on a 20-acre property at U.S. 19 and State Road 52 adjacent to USA Flea Market.

The venue he is proposing would hold 10,000 people per event and cost about $250,000 to build, which Allen said he and his partners would finance. Allen's partners on the project include his brother Bob Allen, Hudson real estate broker Al Meyer and St. Petersburg attorney Richard Avis. He envisions booking big names such as the Beach Boys and Bob Seger in addition to local acts, boat shows, car shows and the Hudson Seafest.

In mid 2001, the county should be receiving the results of a study it commissioned to determine what kind of special events complex might work in Pasco, which could be paid for by the tourist development tax.

Allen says that he would like to work with the county if the study shows that a music venue is viable. He said, "This project is going forward no matter what."

But the location he has chosen may not work. Meyer said he met with the county's planning department, which indicated that there might be too much congestion at that intersection to hold the proposed complex. He said his group is also looking for alternative sites.

County planning department officials did not return calls seeking comment.
