Robbers storm into, ransack couple's home
By Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published January 13, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG -- Four men wearing ski masks held a couple at gunpoint early Friday morning after breaking into their house and ransacking it, police said. The men repeatedly demanded money and to know the whereabouts of a man who once lived in the house at 4050 11th Ave. S, the couple -- Eligh McAfee, 62, and Alberta Cecil, 65 -- told police. The couple, who were not injured, said they heard a noise at the front door about 1:30 a.m. but did not have enough time to get out of bed before the men barged into their room. Officers found the front door lock was broken and the door jamb separated from the wall, a police report said. Although the couple told the men the man they were seeking no longer lived there, two of the men rifled through drawers and closets to find money while the other men held the victims at gunpoint. "I couldn't think of anything," McAfee said. "They went all over the house." With only the light of a fish tank in the bedroom, McAfee said he could see the men were wearing all black. After the men left, the couple said they heard a car drive away, and officers later examined tire marks outside the house. The suspects took a safe belonging to McAfee's son from the bedroom closet, McAfee said, but he did not know the contents of the safe. "They just took the safe and tore up the house," he said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
