Week in sportsBy BRANT JAMES © St. Petersburg Times, published January 14, 2001 Best bet WHO: Springstead at Hernando. WHAT: Boys basketball. WHEN: Friday, 7:30 p.m. WHY: Hernando has exceeded all preseason expectations. The Leopards are halfway through the district schedule with just one loss against Class 4A-8 competition. Springstead has shown promise under first-year coach Scott Bennett. The first meeting between the teams was a 60-59 Hernando victory, in which Jerrell Graham hit decisive free throws. Graham and the Eagles' Steve Ferguson have raised the stakes in the county scoring race. Both are averaging better than 18 points a game, though Ferguson is about one point higher entering the week.
