The Hudson Flotilla 11-07 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is sponsoring safe boating courses at three high schools.

The first will begin Tuesday at Hudson High School, 14410 Cobra Way, Hudson, and meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. A class will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Thursday at Land O'Lakes High School, 20325 Gator Lane, Land O'Lakes. And a class will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Wednesday at River Ridge High School, 11646 Town Center Road, New Port Richey.

The adult basic safe boating course includes topics on boat handling, knots, charts, aids to navigation, navigation rules, trailering, GPS, marine radio, hypothermia, PWC and basic navigation. There is no charge for instruction. However, there is a small fee for textbooks the student keeps. The course runs for six weeks. Upon satisfactory completion, a certificate of completion is issued, which may get the boat owner a reduction in boat insurance.

Also being offered at all three high schools at the same time is a safe boating course for those 20 and younger who must complete a boater education course -- as required in Florida under the Mandatory Boater Education Law -- of 8 hours or more before operating a boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or more. A student must complete all four sessions and achieve a passing score to receive the state of Florida course completion certificate and photo identification card.

For fees and information, call Jerry Colonie at 869-1749.
