Lofton, 40, the son of former Gulf football coach Wilbur Lofton, was running in the Disney Marathon on Jan. 7 in Orlando. Lofton said he felt "terrible" that night. "At first I just thought it was the flu bug," he said. "I went to a doctor's office and he told me to get to a hospital right away and I've been here since Thursday." That night, he was at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point taking intravenous fluids. Doctors said he was dehydrated when he ran the race, Lofton said, and if he had waited a day longer, he would have been on dialysis. Doctors told him he should make a full recovery and may be released as soon as Tuesday. He can't wait to get back to school. "I feel lousy," he said. "I'd rather be there."
