Boggs delivers for Joshua House
By BRANT JAMES © St. Petersburg Times, published January 16, 2001 BROOKSVILLE -- When Olin Mott calls, Wade Boggs answers. This call wasn't such a bad one to take anyway. All the Tampa Bay Devil Rays hitting coach needed to do was show up at World Woods on Monday, play 18 holes of leisurely golf and add some star power to the eighth Joshua House Classic. "When Olin says come on out, you can't say no," said Boggs, who was playing in his fourth Joshua House fundraiser. "I've known him for 10 or 12 years through a charity, and you know when he's running it it's going to be first-class. "When you look at the amount of money they've raised, it speaks volumes," said the former Boston Red Sox star third baseman. Mott, the event's co-organizer, said he expected the tournament to raise $160,000 on Monday, which would boost the lifetime total to $1.02-million. Proceeds benefit a shelter for abused children. "A good cause sells itself," Mott said. Former Buccaneer and current University of South Florida associate athletic director Lee Roy Selmon was unable to play or spend the entire day because of other commitments. But he made rounds in the morning, shaking hands and adding his own high-profile contribution to an event he helped create nine years ago. "I don't have a real big involvement," Selmon said. "I just try to help out by coming up to thank everyone for their commitment to helping out some people in need." Selmon helped stock a memorabilia auction that was held after the event. A football signed by 30 Pro Football Hall of Famers at this year's induction was up for bid. Among the other auction pieces were autographed items donated by the Bucs' Mike Alstott and Tampa native Tino Martinez, a framed print of Muhammad Ali goofing with the Beatles and a signed picture of Annette Funicello -- in a matronly 1960s-style bathing suit -- holding a beach ball for $25. The Buccaneers donated 300 fitted hats like the ones worn this season by coach Tony Dungy. Roughly 280 golfers participated at $125 per entry fee. Title and foursome sponsorships added to the kitty. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
