By Times staff reports

To coincide with its African-American Scientist and Inventors exhibit, the Science Center of Pinellas County is sponsoring an essay contest for fifth-graders throughout the county. Each essay must describe an African-American scientist or inventor.

They should be submitted on no more than two typewritten 8 1/2-by-11-inch pages. On a separate sheet, students should list the following: their name, grade (fifth), school, teacher's name, home phone number, school phone number and T-shirt size.

The first-place prize will include a one-week summer workshop at the Science Center and a free laser presentation for the winner's whole class. The deadline for receiving the essays is Feb. 2. Essays can be mailed to the Science Center, 7701 22nd Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33710. For more information, call (727) 384-0027.
