Bulls bitsBy ROD GIPSON © St. Petersburg Times, published January 19, 2001 TAMPA -- The women opened their indoor track season Tuesday with a solid performance at the University of Florida's O'Connell Center. Kerrine Black, Cori Kill and freshman Alexis McGaffigan led the Bulls in an event that featured squads from throughout Florida. All-American Kerine Black won the triple jump and long jump and set a school record in the 55-meter dash. Meanwhile, McGaffigan set a school record in the high jump in her first collegiate competition. Black ran the 55 preliminary in 6.89 seconds, which is a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships. Her triple jump of 42 feet, 7 inches also was a qualifier. In the long jump, Black led the field with a leap of 19-8. In the high jump, McGaffigan established a school record and a personal best with a jump of 5-7. In the mile, Kill placed third with a 5:01.66. Makeda Prime ran several events and placed third in the 55-meter hurdles with a 7.94. MEN'S BASKETBALL: In helping the Bulls beat Charlotte and Tulane and take over first place in Conference USA's National Division, Altron Jackson earned the league's Player of the Week honors. It marked the first time Jackson has earned the award and just the second time in league history a non-starter earned the honor. Jackson, a junior forward, averaged 23 points per game and 6.5 rebounds during the two wins. He continues to lead the team in scoring and is second in C-USA in scoring at 18.9 per game. He also is eighth in the league in field-goal percentage, hitting 52 percent of his shots, and remains the nation's top-scoring sixth-man. The Bulls play at California on Saturday in a game televised on Fox Sports Net Florida at 10:30 p.m. USF returns home Thursday for a 9 p.m. ESPN game against DePaul. FOOTBALL: In landing four recruits this week, the Bulls have received 16 early commitments. Tuesday, Chris McBee, C.J. Lewis, Anthony Caldwell and Shelley Houston orally committed. McBee, an offensive lineman and Lewis, a wide receiver, are from Titusville Astronaut. Caldwell is a linebacker from Pensacola Escambia, and Houston is an offensive lineman from Immokalee. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
