Baseball coach Bertman to take over as AD at LSU
The LSU Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Friday to hire baseball coach Skip Bertman as the university's next athletic director, succeeding Joe Dean, who has retired.
Chancellor Mark Emmert was given permission by the board to offer Bertman a contract. Emmert said he will return to the board with a contract proposal in March.
"Skip and I have not had time to sit down and talk about the terms of transition or a contract. He's got another job right now. He's coaching baseball," Emmert said.
MORE COLLEGES: Starting this year, the soccer season will begin with the College Coaches Classic, a doubleheader featuring the defending men's and women's Division I champions. ... Miami opens the baseball season at 7:30 tonight with its annual alumni game at Mark Light Stadium.Alabama's Raegen Tomasek won the all-around title with a season-best 39.35 as Alabama beat host Florida 196.65-195.55 in gymnastics at the O'Connell Center.
AUTO RACING: Reigning world champion Marcus Gronholm withdrew from the Monte Carlo Rally. The opening stage was won by Colin McRae. ... Buddy Lazier will have No. 91 on his car this year instead of the No. 1 that usually goes to the IRL's defending champion. ... A memorial service was held in Atlanta for Louis Krages, who helped win the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1985 and committed suicide earlier this month.
SOCCER: Tickets for the United States' World Cup qualifying match against Mexico on Feb. 28 in Columbus, Ohio, sold out in six hours. ... Brazil returns to the Rose Bowl for the first time since it won the 1994 World Cup when it plays the U.S. team in an exhibition match March 3, Rose Bowl general manager Darryl Dunn confirmed. ... Chicago forward Josh Wolff, in training with the U.S. national team, had surgery to remove a pin inserted during an earlier hernia repair.

SKIING: World Cup leader Hermann Maier charged down the treacherous Striefalm course in Kitzbuehel, Austria, and led an Austrian 1-2-3 sweep in a super-G World Cup race. American Daron Rahlves prevented an even greater Austrian sweep, finishing fourth, ahead of Hannes Trinkl. ... Mikko Ronkainen and Kari Traa won the moguls title at the Freestyle World Championships in Whistler, British Columbia. ... Noriaki Kasai led Japan past Finland in team jumping as the World Cup circuit made its first stop on the hill at Park City, Utah, that will be used for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
BIATHLON: Norway rallied in the final leg to win the women's relay race at the World Cup in Anterselva, Italy, beating Russia and Ukraine by nearly one minute.
SNOWBOARDING: Jasey Jay Anderson and Maelle Ricker won cross events at a World Cup meet in Olang, Italy.

OBITUARY: Jim Smith, the coach who took LSU to its first NCAA baseball tournament and won the SEC in 1975, died after a long illness at age 69.
