Car accident victim in critical conditionBy Times staff writers © St. Petersburg Times, published January 21, 2001 TAMPA -- The lone survivor of a fatal accident Friday near Zephyrhills was in critical condition Saturday afternoon in the intensive care unit at St. Joseph's Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Richard Batchellor, 68, of Zephyrhills was downgraded from serious condition Friday evening, the hospital spokeswoman said. His wife, 69-year-old Regina Batchellor, and the other car's driver, 18-year-old Latasha Nicole Hardy of Tampa, were killed in the afternoon accident on Morris Bridge Road. Hardy was speeding when she hit Batchellor's car head-on, Florida Highway Patrol said. Woman is charged in knife attackZEPHYRHILLS -- A 27-year-old woman was arrested Friday after she attacked a man with a knife inside her house, police said. Maricela Ortega, 5636 Fifth St., was charged with aggravated domestic battery, Zephyrhills police said. She told police she hit him with the knife because she wanted him to leave, police said. The victim suffered minor injuries, police said. Ortega was released on her own recognizance Saturday morning from the county jail in Land O'Lakes. Man charged in lewd act with girlPORT RICHEY -- A 27-year-old man was arrested Friday and charged with coercing a 14-year-old girl to have sex with him in his car behind Gulf View Square Mall, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said. Jason Allan Romano, 10807 Filly Lane in Hudson, was charged with committing a lewd and lascivious act on a child under 16, Pasco sheriff's deputies said. Representatives of the wildlife commission's law enforcement office in Tampa declined to comment Saturday on how one of the agency's officers found the man and girl. In his report, a wildlife official said he saw Romano and the victim naked inside Romano's 1986 black two-door Honda. He observed Romano kissing and fondling the girl, his report said. Romano was being held Saturday afternoon at county jail in Land O'Lakes on $5,000 bail. Woman, 86, says carpet cleaner defrauded herHOLIDAY -- The owner of Busy Beaver Carpet Cleaning in Holiday was arrested Friday after an 86-year-old woman alleged that the company took money from her for cleanings she did not want, Pasco County sheriff's deputies said. Patricia Cummins, 60, 10140 Regency Park Blvd. in Port Richey, was charged with running a scheme to defraud, deputies said. The victim said Busy Beaver cleaned her furniture and carpet four times between March 22 and Oct. 23 without permission, deputies said.
