Check it outBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published January 21, 2001 Dillon reads Kerouac: An audio version of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, the novel that helped define the "Beat Generation," is among the nominees for a Grammy Award this year. Nominated in the Best Spoken Word category, the HarperCollins 11-hour unabridged audio is performed by actor Matt Dillon. On the Road was first published in hardcover in 1957, six years after its completion. Kerouac died in St. Petersburg in 1969 at age 47. Other nominees for the Spoken Word category are The Complete Shakespeare Sonnets, performed by Kathleen Turner, Patrick Stewart, Al Pacino and others (Airplay); Jerry Stiller's memoir Married To Laughter -- A Love Story Featuring Anne Meara, read by Stiller (BDD Audio); Sidney Poiter's memoir, The Measure Of A Man, read by Poitier (Harper Audio) and Steve Martin's novella Shopgirl, read by Martin (Simon & Schuster Audio).
