AIDS Community Project is seeking volunteers

The AIDS Community Project of Tampa Bay needs volunteers for its St. Petersburg location. ACP volunteers are needed for the Buddy Program, office support, telephone reception area, special events planning and fundraisers. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Applications can be picked up at 136 Fourth St. N, Suite 303 (Saint Peters Cathedral Annex). ACP buddies spend at least four hours a week with their buddy. Call 820-0305.

Groups aim to create new peacemakers

The Center Against Spouse Abuse, the Haven of RCS, PAR and Community Pride Childcare have established a program called Creating a New Generation of PeaceMakers in Pinellas County. The program is aimed at preschool and middle school children. The organizations will address the issues of violence and diversity. The program, including staff and presentations, is free to all schools. For more information, call 823-4413 in south county and 449-8444 in north county.

Agencies detail new adult's rights

The Florida Bar and the Florida Department of Education have joined efforts to educate the state's high school seniors about their legal rights and responsibilities when they turn 18 years old.

The Bar's committee developed a 24-page informational pamphlet that explains the privileges and legal obligations of new adults.

"Legal Guide for New Adults" have been sent to every senior in Florida's public high schools. Funding was provided by the Florida Bar and mailing expenses were provided by the Florida Department of Education.

The easy-to-read booklet explains such things as an individual's right to vote, right to sue in court, rights and protections as a consumer and employee, rights when arrested and right to serve on a jury. Call (850) 561-5622.

Chamber joins program for online recruiting

The St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce has an Internet program to help businesses find people to fill the many job openings in the St. Petersburg area.

In association with NationJob Inc. of Des Moines, Iowa, the chamber's new partnership will allow all chamber members to place job openings online at www.nationjob.com at no cost. NationJob has testimonials from companies and communities across America who have found good applicants.

The service has been used by employers nationwide to recruit employees from janitorial staff to CEOs. Companies can participate without Internet access or even without the use of a computer. For information, call 821-4069.

Abilities of Florida to hold employment seminar

Abilities of Florida will hold a seminar on "Secrets for Finding Successful Employment" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 24 at their office, 2735 Whitney Road, Clearwater.

Representatives from six employment agencies will be available, and topics will include identifying your skills, writing resumes, completing applications and more.

Abilities of Florida is a non-profit organization that primarily provides services to people with disabilities. The seminar is free and open to the public. Call 538-7370, ext. 364, or check the website at http://www.abilitiesofflorida.com.

Auction will benefit Haiti's poor

A benefit and auction to help the people of Haiti become more self sufficent will be held beginning at 5 p.m. on January 26 and 6 a.m. January 27 at the Sarasota County Fairgrounds, Fruitville Road (exit 39) off I-75. Friday evening offers an opportunity to view the items to be auctioned the next day, a BBQ chicken dinner with two sides for $7.50 and gospel singing at 6:30 p.m. Saturday morning breakfast is served from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and lunch starts at 10:30 a.m. The auction starts at 9 a.m. and features handcrafted items including quilts, cherry and oak bedroom suites, grandfather and grandmother clocks, tools, lawn furniture, certificates for dining and more. Fashion show to benefit local charities

Infinity, the League to Aid Abused Children and Adults, will hold their annual fashion show, Amour du Coeur (Love from the Heart) at 11 a.m. Jan. 30 at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, 11 Central Ave. Fashions will be presented by CC's Boutique, Sharon Clayton's Clothes Plus and Buttons and Bows. Proceeds will benefit CASA, Brookwood and Help a Child Foundation. Tickets are $40. Reservations requested call 360-0350.

Four Chaplains memorial service to be Feb. 4

The 58th Annual "Four Chaplains" memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 4 in the J.C. Cobb room, main hospital building of the VA Medical Center and Park at Bay Pines, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., St. Petersburg. The service, which includes a guest speaker and the posting of the colors, honors four military chaplains who died when their troop transport ship, the SS Dorchester, was torpedoed and sank. The chaplains gave up their life jackets to soldiers as the ship sank off Greenland. Call 392-5648 or 393-0548.

Aluminum can recycling helps build homes

Habitat for Humanity International has teamed up with the Aluminum Association to help needy families. Aluminum Cans Build Habitat for Humanity Homes raises money to build homes through aluminum can recycling.

Five local recycling centers are located throughout Pinellas County. The list of recycling sites can be obtained by calling the Pinellas Habitat for Humanity office at 894-1522.

Individual, family, church, club and company participation is encouraged.

Volunteers also are needed to manage Aluminum Cans Build Habitat for Humanity Homes day-to-day operations.

Both State of Florida and United States flags are available through the Department of State. Costs vary according to size and materials used. You may also have your flag flown over the Florida Capital at no additional charge. YouthBuild offers training program for youths 16-24

YouthBuild St. Petersburg offers an eight-month program for youths ages 16 to 24 who reside in St. Petersburg that includes GED training, leadership development and training in the career field of construction, among other support services. To be considered for admission, call 893-1573.

Museum seeks witnesses to Holocaust experience

Since 1994, the Florida Holocaust Museum, 55 Fifth St. S, St. Petersburg, has been interviewing Holocaust survivors, and now the museum is expanding its work to include refugees, hidden children, liberators, protectors, freedom fighters and children of survivors.

Because of the age of these eyewitnesses -- most are over 65 -- the museum considers making an official record of the testimonies a priority.

If you have an eyewitness account or have information pertaining to the events surrounding the Nazi rise to power, invasion of Europe or other Nazi war crimes, the museum asks for your participation in the project. For information, call the museum at 820-0100.

Program teaches dangers of substance abuse

Family Resources Inc., a non-profit family service provider that works in conjunction with the James B. Sanderlin Family Center, offers the Kinship Care Family Heritage program for children ages 6-10 and their caregivers.

The program is open to caregiver families who are active participants in support groups at the Sanderlin Center, who are in need of assistance or have struggled with substance abuse problems.

The program will be offered in three 14-week segments through August. The purpose is to provide stability for children in the caregiver's homes by strengthening the overall family unit. For information, call 550-4250.
