School briefsBy Times staff reports © St. Petersburg Times, published January 23, 2001 Town meeting on children and Internet privacy Pinellas County Schools and the University of South Florida are sponsoring a town meeting entitled "How to Protect Your Children in Cyberspace" from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Pinellas Park High School, 6305 118th Ave. N, Largo. Parry Aftab, the author of The Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Children in Cyberspace, will be the featured presenter. Aftab is a lawyer who specializes in online privacy law. Other panel members are Judy Ambler, supervisor, instructional technology, Pinellas County Schools; Michael Berson, University of South Florida College of Education, department of secondary education and Dave Gussow, technology editor, St. Petersburg Times. PTSAs workshop for parentsThe PTSAs of Safety Harbor Middle School, Countryside High School and Kings Highway Elementary School have teamed up to sponsor Pinellas County Schools' first Parent University from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 3 at Countryside High School, 3000 State Road 580, Clearwater. Parent University is a half-day program designed for parents, grandparents and guardians of children in kindergarten through high school. The program will feature information and resources needed to build strong families. At 9 a.m., Eric Deggans and Steve Persall of the St. Petersburg Times will present the keynote speech, "Children Need More than the Remote Control." Afterward, parents can attend two 50-minute seminars led by area professionals. Seminar topics include sibling rivalry, childhood depression, anger management and motivational strategies. Showcase of students' artThe Pinellas County Council of PTAs will hold its annual Reflections reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Christian Life Enrichment Center, 1199 Highland Ave., Largo. Reflections is an art, photography, music and literature program sponsored by the National Parent Teacher Association. Invitation to view a starry nightThe Science Center of Pinellas County invites the public to enjoy a free telescope viewing at 7 p.m. on Saturday. At 7, 8 and 9 p.m., the center will offer planetarium presentations and animal presentations for $1 per person, and at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m., it will offer laser shows for $2 per person. High school presents discussion on Catholicism and educationClearwater Central Catholic High School will hold a discussion on the worldwide impact of Catholic education, leadership and technology.
