Senators win to get to No. 1 in East

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Martin Havlat scored with 3.9 seconds left in the second period to lift the Ottawa Senators over the New York Islanders 3-2 Tuesday night and into first place in the Eastern Conference.

As time wound down in the period, Radek Bonk passed from behind the net to Havlat, whose in-close shot beat goalie John Vanbiesbrouck.

Alexei Yashin and Shawn McEachern also scored for the Senators, unbeaten in 10 visits to Nassau Coliseum (8-0-2) since Jan. 6, 1996. Patrick Lalime turned aside 22 shots for his 20th win.

The Senators have taken points in nine of their past 10 games (8-1-0-1).

Claude Lapointe and Mark Parrish scored for New York, winless in four games (0-3-1-0) and 1-9-1 in the past 11. Vanbiesbrouck played well in stopping 35 shots.

BLUES 5, CANADIENS 2: Alexander Khavanov stepped into Chris Pronger's role and scored his fourth goal of the season for visiting St. Louis.

Khavanov, who got more playing time on special teams because of the All-Star defenseman's absence, scored an unassisted goal 18:28 into the second period to put St. Louis ahead 4-2.

Pronger, last season's NHL MVP, had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee earlier in the day and will miss at least the next four weeks.

Jochen Hecht, Ladislav Nagy and Daniel Corso scored first-period goals and Scott Young added his 23rd 1:15 into the third as the Blues won their third in four games.

BLUE JACKETS 2, SABRES 1: Serge Aubin scored twice as expansion Columbus won the first meeting between the teams. The visiting Blue Jackets have won two straight and have earned at least one point in four consecutive games, tying a season high.

The Sabres have lost two straight and scored two goals in their past three. The loss kept them a point behind Toronto in the battle for second place in the Northeast Division.

"We should win 90 percent of these games, and we need these points," goalie Dominik Hasek said. "If we want to compete against teams like Toronto and Ottawa, we can't waste any more games like that."

BLACKHAWKS: Center Alex Zhamnov has a broken larynx and bruised vocal cords after being hit in the throat by a puck and is out indefinitely. Zhamnov was injured in Sunday's 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh when a deflected puck struck him. An examination Tuesday revealed the injuries.

ISLANDERS: The New York Post reported that Vanbiesbrouck said he wanted to be traded to a contending team. Vanbiesbrouck vigorously denied the report at the team's morning skate.

RED WINGS: defenseman Larry Murphy, 39, was expected to play in his 1,600th game when Detroit hosts Nashville tonight. Only former Red Wings great Gordie Howe (1,767) has played in more games.

"They can't accuse me of losing a step," Murphy joked. "Speed has never been my forte. I don't remember skating by anybody in my career."

ALL-STAR GAME: Vancouver defenseman Ed Jovanovski was chosen to replace Pronger on the North American team. Pronger was selected as a starter in fan voting for the Feb. 4 game at Denver. His replacement in the starting lineup will be named later, the NHL said.

Jovanovski, 24, will make his All-Star Game debut.
