Wife of jockey Cordero is killed

Marjorie Cordero, the wife of Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr. and a former jockey, trainer and agent, was killed in a hit-and-run accident while jogging in Greenvale, N.Y. She was 41.

She was hit about a half-mile from her house Monday night, police said, and died at North Shore University Hospital.

Cordero was a jockey from 1982-85, winning 71 races from 911 mounts and earning more than $1-million in purses.

SOCCER: MLS and the United Soccer Leagues announced a restructuring, resulting in the A-League's Charleston Battery, Minnesota Thunder and Richmond Kickers being affiliated with the Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Carolina Dynamo of the D3 Pro League Team also is affiliated with the Mutiny.

TRACK AND FIELD: Two world records in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase set by Cristina Iloc-Casandra were ratified by the sport's world governing body. Iloc-Casandra set her first mark of 9 minutes, 43.64 seconds on Aug. 7 at Bucharest, Romania, then lowered it Aug. 30 at Reims, France, running 9:40.20. ... Marion Jones will be part of KNBC-TV's live commentary team for the Feb. 11 Powerade Indoor Championships in Los Angeles. She will conduct track interviews.

FIGURE SKATING: Defending champion Yevgeny Plushchenko mastered a quad-triple combination to win the short program at the European Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia. In the dance competition, defending world and European champions Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat tied Barbara Fusa Poli and Maurizio Margaglio after compulsories. The women's competition begins today with qualifying. Top contenders Irina Slutskaya and Maria Butyrskaya -- Michelle Kwan's main rivals for the worlds in March -- skate in different groups. ... A new jumping competition for Olympic-eligible skaters will be held March 3-4 in Lyon, France.

COLLEGES: Mississippi Valley State was placed on two years' probation by the NCAA, with three former staff members penalized for arranging for individuals to take college entrance exams for others. ... South Florida's Kerine Black was named C-USA athlete of the week in indoor track, the first such award of the 2001 season.

BOXING: Former world featherweight champion Prince Naseem Hamed agreed to fight Marco Antonio Barrera in a non-title bout on April 7 in Las Vegas. ... Referee Richard Steele has retired. Steele said Saturday's fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Diego Corrales was the last of his career. ... A 17-year-old girl testified on the opening day of the trial of WBC super-middleweight champion Dave Hilton Jr. that he sexually abused her during a three-year period.

BOWLING: Jeff Lizzi rolled a perfect game and finished with a 220 average and the lead after the second round of qualifying in the PBA Tour's Orleans Casino Open in Las Vegas.

SNOWBOARDING: Karin Ruby won her third world championship, edging Isabelle Blanc in a giant slalom in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. Ruby finished with a two-heat time of 2:33.13, .24 seconds ahead of Blanc, who had the best second-leg time to move up from fifth place.

SKIING: Benjamin Raich won his third consecutive World Cup slalom, virtually assuring himself a spot at next week's World Championships. Raich twisted his way down the lighted Planai course in Schladming, Austria, in 1:50.54.

HANDBALL: The United States lost to Germany 40-12 in a Group C match on the opening day of the men's World Team Championships in Paris.

KICKBOXING: Largo's David Bybee, a graduate of Seminole High, won the heavyweight division of the European Open in Paris.
