Dawn Center plans rummage sale

The Dawn Center of Hernando County will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday at 15009 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. The center will have a clothing Super Bowl Bag Sale at $5 per bag. Rain date will be Feb. 3. For information or to donate, call 796-9747.

Korean War veterans to be honored

The Korean American Cultural Foundation of Seoul, South Korea, and co-sponsors, the Military Order of Purple Heart and the Korean War Veterans Association, will present "Korea Comes to You-Winter Event 2001," a salute to Korean War veterans, 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at the West Tampa Convention Center, 3005 W Columbus Drive, Tampa.

Among the many Korean War veterans honored, 20 members of the local Korean War Veterans, Nature Coast Chapter 174 will be presented with specially minted bronze medallions. All Korean War veterans and the public are invited to this free event. For information, contact Mac, 597-0984.

Engineer needed for county committee

The Hernando County Commission has a vacancy on the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Committee. An applicant must be a resident and registered voter in Hernando County, and an engineer. Application forms are available in the county administrator's office, 20 N Main St., Room 460, Brooksville, or by calling 754-4000. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Feb. 5.

Help available for income tax filing

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, sponsored by the Hernando County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, offers help with basic income tax returns begining Feb. 5 at the following locations and times:

STAR Education Center-1036 Varsity Drive, Brooksville, Mondays and Wednesdays 3-5 p.m., Thursdays, 3-7 p.m.

Senior Citizens Center-7925 Rhanbuoy Drive, Spring Hill, Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to noon.

West Hernando Library-6335 Blackbird Ave., Spring Hill, Tuesdays and Fridays 9:30 a.m to 1 p.m.

East Hernando Library-31170 Cortez Blvd., Ridge Manor West, Mondays, 1-5 p.m.

Tax help for those with special needs

Free assistance is offered to those with special needs, including persons with disabilities, non-English speaking people, and older taxpayers who file Form 1040 EZ, 1040A, or a basic Form 1040 Federal tax return.

Volunteers are also on hand to alert taxpayers to special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible. Taxpayers seeking assistance are asked to bring this year's tax package, wage and earnings statement (W-2) from all employers, interest statements from banks (form 1099) a copy of last year's tax return if available, and other relevant information about income and expenses. Electronic filing also is available.

All volunteers must complete an IRS training course in basic income tax return preparation before they can assist taxpayers. Volunteers are trained to complete forms 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040.

PTA schedules general meeting

The Hernando County PTA Council will hold its regularly scheduled general membership meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Springstead High School cafeteria, with a 30-minute special presentation titled "Metro Crime Prevention of Florida" to follow at 7 p.m. Find out what time of day most burglaries occur, whether you can be arrested for speeding, whether a deadbolt can be opened with pliers and how to tell if you are being stalked.
