Reclaimed water system loses pressureBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published January 25, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG -- St. Petersburg's reclaimed water system lost pressure for a few hours Wednesday morning when tests showed that two of the four wastewater treatment plants were simultaneously producing water not clean enough to go into the system. At one treatment plant, the water was too cloudy, and at another, water tested positive for fecal coliform bacteria, said City Utilities Director Bill Johnson. So the treated wastewater was flushed into deep injection wells instead of being piped into the reclaimed water system. One of the plants came back on line Wednesday afternoon, restoring service to residents who use the highly treated wastewater for irrigation, Johnson said. The other plant will be reconnected to the system as soon as possible, he added. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
