UNC tops UVa, wins 13th straight

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Joseph Forte scored 33 points, nine during a key stretch in the second half, and No. 5 North Carolina extended its winning streak to 13 games Wednesday by beating No. 13 Virginia 88-81.

North Carolina led 50-35 at halftime, but Virginia went on a 16-4 run to start the second half. Donald Hand and Chris Williams keyed the run with consecutive three-pointers as the Cavaliers pulled within 54-51 just five minutes in.

Forte answered with a layup, a three-point play and two pull-up jumpers as North Carolina built the lead back to 65-57 with 11 minutes left. He also hit a three-pointer with 5:15 left after Virginia pulled within 75-71.

"He's an All-American and you put the ball in his hands," North Carolina coach Matt Doherty said of Forte. "He made some big, big plays. He seems to focus better when the game's on the line."

"Forte is an unbelievable player," said Virginia coach Pete Gillen, whose team has lost three of four in the ACC after opening the season 10-0.

NO. 2 DUKE 85, NO. 9 WAKE FOREST 62: Duke made the top defense in the conference look rather ordinary. Jason Williams scored 27 points as the host Blue Devils used a 21-3 run to close the first half and clutch three-point shooting. Duke improved to 52-2 in its last 54 regular-season conference games and beat the Demon Deacons for the ninth straight time.

GA. TECH 111, CLEMSON 108: Alvin Jones scored 26 points, Shaun Fein had seven of Georgia Tech's school-record 17 three-pointers and the visiting Yellow Jackets survived Will Solomon's 41 points. Solomon had a chance to tie the score at 110 with 16 seconds left and front-rimmed his shot. He had a three-point try with five seconds to go that also missed the mark. Clemson was without starting point guard Ed Scott, who had the flu.

SEC

LSU 82, MISSISSIPPI ST. 73: Brian Beshara scored 24 points, Collis Temple had 27 and Ronald Dupree had 14 points and was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line for host LSU.

GEORGIA 82, VANDERBILT 73: D.A. Layne scored 26 points as visiting Georgia won its fifth straight in the league for the first time since 1990.

C-USA

LOUISVILLE 63, CINCINNATI 54: Louisville became the first conference team to win at Cincinnati in 35 games -- since the Cardinals did it Feb. 22, 1996.

SOUTHERN MISS 72, HOUSTON 51: David Wall scored 18 points, 15 in the first half, for host Southern Mississippi, which outscored the Cougars 29-10 in the final nine minutes of the first half to lead 42-20 at halftime.

UAB 81, CHARLOTTE 61: Le-Andrew Bass scored 23 points and P.J. Arnold added 21 for host UAB.

MARQUETTE 73, SAINT LOUIS 64: Brian Wardle scored 20 points to lead visiting Marquette, which shot 65 percent in the second half.

Top 25/Nation

NO. 3 MICHIGAN ST. 74, NORTHWESTERN 58: Jason Richardson scored 16 points and Zach Randolph added 15 points and six rebounds for visiting Michigan State. Andre Hutson, playing in his first game since being sidelined with pneumonia, had six points in 17 minutes.

NO. 21 IOWA 87, MINNESOTA 74: Reggie Evans scored 25 points to lead visiting Iowa, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Evans, the nation's second-leading rebounder (12.3 a game), also had 10 rebounds.

OKLAHOMA ST. 76, TEXAS A&M 64: Maurice Baker scored 22 points and host Oklahoma State used a 14-4 rally in the final three minutes.

NEBRASKA 85, MISSOURI 79: Kimani Ffriend scored 20 points and had 16 rebounds for host Nebraska.

CAL-SANTA BARBARA: Forward Adama Ndiaye will redshirt this season. His left ring finger, broken in the preseason, hasn't healed as quickly as expected.

DAYTON: Starting forward Brooks Hall will miss 2-4 weeks with a stress fracture in his lower left leg.

State

ARK.-LITTLE ROCK 65, FIU 59: Laverne Smith's 21 points led host Arkansas-Little Rock, which shot 52 percent, including 6-of-12 from three-point range.

Karel Rosario led Florida International with 20 points and Carlos Arroyo added 12.
