INVERNESS -- The throaty roars of tractor motors straining to pull oversized loads will fill the air this weekend at the second annual tractor pull and antique tractor show at the county fairgrounds.

The event will include live entertainment beginning at 2:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, along with a tractor parade around the fairgrounds at noon both days. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 11 at the gate.

The tractor pull takes place at the livestock arena. Take U.S. 41 S to the fairgrounds, just past the airport. Grandstand seating has been increased from 200 last year to 2,400 seats to accommodate this year's show. There are two spectator entrances, one in front of the auditorium and the second farther south on U.S. 41 at the tractor pull arena.

What exactly is a tractor pull?

A tractor pull consists of a tractor pulling a heavy sled. As the pull starts, a weight on the sled begins to move up an incline toward the trailer hitch, making the sled harder to pull and causing the tractor to spin its wheels.

A successful pull, when the tractor pulls the sled past the finish line, is referred to as a "full pull."

This year's show also includes an antique tractor display, a craft show Saturday in the auditorium and dinners served today and Saturday in the horticulture building for $7.

Children up to age 10 will participate in a junior tractor pull, using pedal-powered John Deere miniature toy tractors. The tractors, valued at $200 each, will be given away this weekend during a drawing, said Jean Grant, fair association director.

The junior tractor pull will be at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Gates open at 10:30 a.m., with lots of musical entertainment. Among the entertainers are David Robertson and Donna Sue Bobst. Jesse Watson will present a salute to classic country music, featuring Two Thorns and a Rose, Jim and Sheila Harpin and Jimmy Brown and Friends.

The tractor pulls begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with parades at noon and 4 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
