St. Petersburg Times newsartist David Williams spent more than four months planning, art-directing and illustrating this special section.
Williams created his illustrations on a Macintosh computer, using FreeHand and Photoshop. He accumulated much of his reference materials from a variety of Web sites.
"I spent as much time on the Internet as I did actually producing the stuff," said Williams, 40, of St. Petersburg.
Williams has been with the Times for 13 years, winning several national and state awards.
"Astronomy and space travel have always been interests of mine," said Williams, who has enjoyed many evenings gazing at the stars through his own telescope. "One of my favorite movies is 2001: A Space Odyssey."
Williams maintains a personal studio that produces fine art, paintings and monoprints that he has shown at numerous exhibits around Florida and other areas of the country.
