Letters to the EditorsRecycling is good, but fee is not warranted
© St. Petersburg Times, published January 28, 2001 Editor: Re: Curbside recycling: I am against paying $3.50 a month for curbside collection of recyclable goods. Don't get me wrong; I am definitely for recycling. But I think it should be done on a personal basis. I have been recycling plastic, paper and glass for years. I find no difficulty in taking these things to the bins made available in many shopping areas. It takes only a matter of minutes when shopping and is not out of the way. I was under the impression the plastic and newspapers were used in some other way after reprocessing, so they are not wasted. I think you should have the person in charge of recycling give talks to organizations so people will see how important it is and get them interested in doing this on a personal basis. That would be better than filling up our landfills. If they realized what it was used for, they would cooperate. I walk every morning, pick up aluminum cans, sell them and send a small check to All Children's Hospital. I'm sure many people collect the cans, so why wouldn't they recycle other throwaways? People of Hernando did vote down the curbside pick up, and I'm sure it is because it is so easy for the "powers that be" to add fee after fee for any little thing.
More recycling bins needed in parking lotsEditor: Re: Recycling is a proposal too good to throw out, Jan. 17 Hernando Times editorial: While I think curbside recycling is an impractical idea, I do think that if we had recycling bins available in more visible areas throughout Spring Hill, they would be used in greater numbers. If more grocery store parking lots could house aluminum, glass, plastic and paper bins, I think more people would be aware and use them. I use them occasionally, but only when I think of it. If they were more visible and available, I would use them all the time. In order to implement this, there would need to be a countywide effort to promote recycling and to advertise in community service publications.
