Local celebrities to serve at dinner dance fundraiserBy Times staff write © St. Petersburg Times, published January 28, 2001 PALM HARBOR -- Supporters of the Palm Harbor Senior Activity Center have scheduled a fundraising dinner dance Feb. 9 at the center, 1500 16th St. Dr. Art Polin of Palm Harbor will perform magic, and the Clam Bayou Jazz Band will play Dixieland, swing and blues. Celebrity servers for the dinner include Mease hospitals chief operating officer Jim Pfeiffer, state Sen. Jack Latvala, County Commissioner Susan Latvala, Tax Collector Diane Nelson, Palm Harbor fire chief James Angle and WFTS-Ch. 28 newscaster Doug Smith. Major sponsors include Marriott Senior Living Services, HCR-Manor Care Palm Harbor, Arden Courts and Westchester Gardens. Tickets are $15 a person or $25 a couple. Knous, the son of Joey and Cindy Knous of Tarpon Springs, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Knous, 15, received the honor during a ceremony Jan. 5. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 48, is on the dean's list at Tarpon Springs High and ran cross-country for the school. For his Eagle Scout service project, he spent about 225 hours building a 12- by 16-foot shelter for employees at Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital. The shelter, designed to be used by employees on breaks, has a green tin roof, a picnic table and steps leading up the hill where it stands. Puppet theater presents 'Pinocchio'TARPON SPRINGS -- The Frog Prince Puppetry Arts Center and Theatre will present Pinocchio, a full-length puppet show performed with hand-carved wooden marionettes, at 2 p.m. today at 210 S Pinellas Ave., Suite 158. Three firefighters selected to be trusteesPALM HARBOR -- The Palm Harbor Special Fire Control and Rescue District Pension Board of Trustees has appointed firefighters Scott Sanford, Demetri Moustopoulos and Cathy Wagner as new trustees. Moustopoulos was appointed by the fire and rescue district's board of commissioners to replace new fire board commissioner Ken Peluso. The pension board selected Wagner, and Sanford was selected by firefighters who are members of the pension plan. The remaining two positions are held by fire board appointee James Nelson and firefighter Kevin Mulligan. Each trustee serves a two-year term. Heritage Center intends to offer GreekTARPON SPRINGS -- Courses in basic and intermediate Greek will be offered at the Heritage Center in Tarpon Springs. Dates for the classes have not been set, but they might be offered Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Maria Pantelis, who will teach the classes, is a native of Athens, Greece, and has taught bilingual classes for many years.
