DADE CITY -- Pasco's Kayla Bresch tied Amanda Newsome for the team lead in goals scored this season with eight. However, four came against Hudson, a team she will soon face again.

Bresch had two goals in each of Pasco's wins (3-1 and 5-3) over Hudson. On Monday, the two teams meet for a third time at 8 p.m. in the opening round of the Class 2A, District 8 tournament at Pasco.

"It must be her favorite team, I guess," Pasco coach Barry Grayling said.

Lest the Pirates (7-4-1 in the district) become overconfident, Grayling warned that the Cobras (4-8-0) are "a new team again. Anything can happen."

Most likely to happen, though, is a Springstead-Zephyrhills championship game. Springstead (9-0-3) has a first-round bye while Zephyrhills (9-1-2) kicks off the tourney Monday at 6 p.m. against Hernando (1-11-0).

The Bulldogs defeated Hernando 3-2 and 6-0 earlier this season. Zephyrhills also lost 3-1 to Springstead before rallying for a 2-2 tie in the second game on late goals by Ali Beasman and Joslynn Willis.

Zephyrhills has four players with at least 27 points. Renee Yonkof leads the team in goals (17) and points (33).

Willis has 11 goals and Beasman is second on the team in points with 32, thanks to a team-high 14 assists.

Terra Rosensweig has nine goals and nine assists.

On the other side of the ball, Zephyrhills' Nikki Castro is the top defender in the county and keeper Mary Fregoso has nine shutouts in her first year as a starter.

First-year Mitchell (4-7-1) plays Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Central.

The Mustangs won five games despite playing with no seniors and just two juniors.
