Stetson leads from start to finish off UCF
DELAND -- Santos Hampton scored a career-best 28 as Stetson defeated UCF 83-65 in a Trans American Athletic Conference game Saturday night.
Hampton was 11-of-14 from the field to lead four Hatters in double figures and Stetson led from start to finish.
The Hatters were up 14-4 after the first four minutes and 25-8 on a Sebastian Singletary dunk with 9:49 remaining in the first half.
UCF closed to 34-30 at halftime, but Stetson started the second half with a 12-2 run and led by double figures the rest of the way.
Singletary added 18 points for the Hatters, and Will Robertson and Eugene Ambrose had 12 and 10, respectively.
HAMPTON 87, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 85: Tarvis Williams scored 25 and had five blocks for the host Pirates, who shot 60.9 percent. Bethune-Cookman had a chance to tie at 85 in the final minutes but a three-pointer missed and the Pirates hit two free throws to seal it.
NORFOLK ST. 78, FLORIDA A&M 64: Cornelius Roberts scored 17 and Darrell Neal had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the host Spartans. Norfolk State led 33-26 at halftime and coasted by holding the Rattlers to 29.9 percent shooting. Jason Miles led FAMU with 16 points and Demarcus Wilkins had 12.
JACKSONVILLE 71, FAU 55: Shawn Platts scored 20 and Kevin Sheppard and Kris Hunter each added 16 for the host Dolphins. Platts and Sheppard combined for 24 of Jacksonville's 38 second-half points. The two guards helped increase the 33-19 halftime lead to 20 points midway through the half.
FLA. SOUTHERN 71, ECKERD 69: Derek Heard made two free throws with 9.6 seconds left as the host Mocs moved into a first-place tie with Eckerd in the Sunshine State Conference.
W. KENTUCKY 55, FIU 46: Nashon McPherson scored a game-high 17 and teammate David Boyden added 10 against host Florida International.
