Tarpon Springs teen earns rank of Eagle Scout
Michael C. Knous, of Tarpon Springs High School recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He began scouting in first grade as a Tiger Cub and crossed over to Boy Scouts five years ago. In scouting, he has earned 53 merit badges. He has served as patrol leader and scribe and is certified in CPR.
For six years he has played baseball for the Tarpon Springs Little League. In high school, he is a Dean's List student. He participated on the cross-country team and currently participates on the track team.
Michael performed his Eagle Scout service project for Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs, where he built a shelter designed to blend with nature. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joey Knous.
Three Highland Christian Academy students have written poems that will be published next fall in a textbook entitled, A Collection of Young Poets. Poems by sixth-grader Alyssa Pereira, seventh-grader Matthew Schenker and eighth-grader Jacqueline Fitzgerald were selected among thousands of national entries.
Heather Samuelson of Palm Harbor University High School won the the Voice of Democracy contest of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliaries Posts 1658 and 2473. She will now advance to the state competition.
Jennifer Powell of Clearwater Central Catholic High was selected to attend the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference. During the six-day conference, Powell met with key government leaders and participated in events accompanying the Presidential Inauguration. She also has participated numerous school and community activities including Girls State and the Model United Nations Program.
