North Pinellas digestBy Times staff reports © St. Petersburg Times, published January 31, 2001 Man accused of attacking boyLARGO -- A 45-year-old Largo man was arrested Monday night after police say he tried to pick a fight with a 16-year-old boy. Police charged Nicholas Robert Pedro, of 5181/2 Fourth St. NW, with child abuse battery, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and disorderly intoxication. Police say that around 9:50 p.m., Pedro walked through a residential neighborhood of Largo and tried to pick a fight with the boy by pushing and trying to punch him, the arrest affidavit says. The teenager restrained Pedro. At Pedro's home, police found a leafy green substance along with drug paraphernalia, the affidavit says. Police took Pedro to Largo Medical Center for a medical clearance and there he yelled obscenities and became, "loud and obnoxious causing a scene disrupting the peace and quiet of ill patients," authorities said. He was held at the Pinellas County Jail on Tuesday in lieu of $5,750 bail. Man hit by car identifiedA man struck by a car Monday night on Roosevelt Boulevard was identified Tuesday by authorities as Thomas N. Detrano, 43, of 1621 Trotter Road in Largo. He was listed Tuesday in fair condition at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he was taken by helicopter after the accident. Detrano was trying to cross the westbound lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard west of 58th Street N around 8:10 p.m. Monday, authorities said. He was hit by Debra L. Fast, 38, of 300 Sixth St. N, No. 9, in Safety Harbor. She was heading west in the outside lane, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Detrano stepped into the path of Fast's 1991 Nissan, authorities said. A Florida Highway Patrol investigation is ongoing.
