ST. PETERSBURG -- The former director of St. Petersburg's folk fair society was mugged Thursday night while walking to a First Street NE parking lot from her job at BayWalk.

A youth ran up behind Lotta Baumann, snatched her purse and knocked her down, police reports said.

It was the second such incident at First Street NE and Third Avenue during the past two weeks. An employee of another BayWalk shop had her purse snatched about 10:15 p.m. on Jan. 17, police said.

"We're taking a look at that area through environmental design. It's very dark, and there are some trees that still need to be cut back," said St. Petersburg police Sgt. Gary Robbins.

Baumann, 56, was treated at Edward White Hospital for shoulder, hip and rib injuries. Her purse contained a cell phone, credit cards, checkbook and sunglasses, but no cash, according to the reports.

Thursday evening, Baumann clocked off her job at Mephisto Shoes, 117 Second Ave. N, at 8:12, police said.

Baumann's assailant was described as a black male about 17 years old, 5 feet 7, and about 150 pounds. He was described as having close-cut hair and wearing a dark jacket.

BayWalk general manager Jill Connolly expressed concern about the incidents. BayWalk has 24-hour on-site security escorts for employees or customers requesting one, Connolly said.

The Jan. 17 incident took place at a parking garage across the street from where the mugging occurred Thursday. Robbins said there are different suspects in that case.
