A Basketball Bond

By Times staff writer

© St. Petersburg Times, published January 31, 2001

Dominique Redding and Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen have led parallel -- and often intertwined -- lives. Both are immensely talented and dedicated basketball players who have had almost unqualified success on the court. Both are considered among the top five sophomores in Florida.

Basketball is how they met about six years ago, and basketball is the tether between them. They practice together and hang out together whenever possible. From the end of the high school season -- Redding plays for Clearwater, Roegiers-Jensen for Boca Ciega -- until the end of the summer, they play for the Clearwater Green Wave AAU team and attend basketball camp at the universities of Florida and Tennessee.

In August, the Times introduced Redding and Roegiers-Jensen in the first installment of a periodic series on the basketball prodigies. In Part II, nearing the end of their sophomore seasons, one of them is finding continued success while the other encounters the first obstacle of her career.
